Town's surroundings
In the old center of the town Baia Mare the bell tower build by Stefan cel Mare dominates the surroundings.The district museum, housed in a buildind constructed betwen the years 1734-1738, offers detailed informations about the history of north Transilvania. Another tourist attraction is the museum of minerals,located in a 15-th century building wich fascinates visitors by its beauty and the variety of the minerals that are exposed.
For those who want to know more about the romanian rural traditions we recommend them a tour through the villages in the close regions ,where you can admire the wooden churches that are unique in the world ,and the traditional architecture with the all known Maramures gate.If you like bicycle rides then you can choose one of the mountain cycling routes accessible from Baia Mare,as Ignis,Mogosa,Gutai,Piatra Soimului,Dealul Crucii,or you can enjoy the superb scenery of the natural reservations like Creasta Cocosului (a 70 m high wall of andesite of volcanic origin),Cheile Tatarului (a narrow pass on the valleys Brazilor and Runcu)and the Blue Lake (the name comes from the colour of the water that usually is emerald green ,but in winter time it gets blue).
The trip at Cheile Tatarului is one of the favorite tours of the mountain cycling lovers from Romania .Maramures is from far the best destination .The Rodnei mountains with the Pietrosu peak (2303 m) are the highest from this area and they hold the most important natural reservation from north Romania .You can climb in the Rodnei mountains from the Borsa station which offers in the winter time good skiing and snowboarding conditions .
